  • LA County Sheriff's Deputy Killed In Line of Duty (scroll down for audio)
    (added 08/11/03)
On Saturday August 2, 2003, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Sorensen, a 12-yr veteran with the department, was shot and killed after he responded to a trespassing call in the Lake Los Angeles area just east of Palmdale, CA. While it is still unknown what happened, a witness reported hearing about six gunshots and called police. When Deputies arrived at the scene, they were able to locate Deputy Sorensen's patrol car, but not Deputy Sorensen. After searching for about an hour, Deputies discovered Deputy Sorensen's body. He had been shot and killed after an apparent struggle.

The suspect was located a week later (Aug. 08, 2003) in a house not far from the scene of the crime. Sheriff's SWAT teams surrounding the location and when suspect, who admitted to killing Deputy Sorenson over the deputies stolen radio, refused to surrender, Deputies attempted to end the standoff by firing tear gas into the house and assaulting the structure with a huge, mechanized battering ram. A major gun-battle ensued when the suspect opened fire with an assault rifle minutes before the house erupted in flames and burned to the ground. The suspects body was later located inside, along with Deputy Sorensen's gun and radio. This standoff took place live on KCAL9 news in the Los Angeles area.

Deputy Sorensen is survived by his wife and two sons.

Full details on the events surrounding this tragic event can be found at AFallenHero.com - a tribute site in honor of Deputy Sorenson.

This recording does not contain the actual child talking but does contain the dispatcher asking the child to call the fire department. I heard a young sounding child over Los Angeles County Fire's dispatch channel say "stop fire department or I'll call the police". The dispatcher immediately advised the child to "stop talking on the radio, it is illegal." This was followed by a request from the dispatcher for the child to call the fire department.
