Note:
Please do not link directly to audio files.
Due to high bandwidth transfers and increased cost, full-length
clips of large audio files are available on CD-ROM
with a website donation.
Files are in .wav format and can be played in media
players that support the WAV format. Periods of silence have been
removed from recordings to reduce length and file size. Recordings
are from the Los Angeles, CA. area unless otherwise
indicated.
- Discovery Space Shuttle Mission STS-114
(4min:02sec, 710K - added 12/01/06)
One of my favorite scanning pastimes is monitoring space shuttle
mission communications, especially after the Space Shuttle
Columbia tragedy in 2003. The featured audio clip is from
Space Shuttle Discovery STS-114
Mission back on July 26, 2005. The recording was made from
the JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, CA) WR6KEL repeater broadcast
on amateur radio frequency 147.1580. This repeater re-broadcasts
the signal audio signal from NASA TV.
The audio clip starts after the shuttle has already landed. I
got caught up in monitoring communications while watching the
shuttle fly directly overhead during its pre-dawn landing at
Edwards AFB here in Southern California and forgot to start the
recorder - DOH! While the audio may sound boring to some, the
exciting stuff is listening during a launch or landing. You can listen for yourself next
week as Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled to launch (STS-116)
on December 7, 2006 at 9:35PM EST.
The crew of STS-116 will deliver a third truss segment, a SPACEHAB module and other key components during the shuttle's 20th mission to the International Space Station. (See
links below).
Note: Note all scanners are capable of receiving NASA
frequencies. NASA TV audio signal is re-broadcast in real-time
over amateur radio bands across the U.S. See links below.

High-Speed Motorcycle Chase
(audio links below)
(added 02/23/07)
As most of you already know, I live in Los Angeles County, CA,
the verified "Pursuit Capitol of the World". We, or,
us "Southern Californian's" experience on average 1-2
or more televised pursuits every week - and that's just televised
pursuit. In reality, there are dozen's of pursuits that take
place throughout LA County on any given night.
This month's audio clip features a high-speed motorcycle pursuit
in Eastern LA County that started around 1:15 a.m. on a Sunday morning
and lasted just over an hour reaching speeds over 105-mph on
surface streets and freeways street - even coming within a block
of my home. Due to the file size of the audio clip, I had to
make two clips to narrow it down.
+ Part 1 (3min:35sec,
632K)
This part cover the portion where the chase comes near my home.
As I listened to the chase and heard it getting close, I went
outside and could hear the sirens and see the helicopter
circling over the pursuit (see
map - black circle indicates helicopter's outer pattern and
red dot is my home). As the pursuit turned North on Hollenbeck,
I could hear the motorcycle "throttle-up" as it gained
speed - sounded pretty loud at one-thirty in the morning!
+ Part 2 (4min:51sec,
854K)
This part covers the portion where the suspect gets on the freeway
and "opens-up" reaching speeds up to 110-mph. The
suspect ended up driving down a dead-end street in San
Bernardino County far from where it started in Los Angeles
County. Unfortunately, due to the distance where the pursuit
ended, it was just out of my scanner's range and communications
began to break so I had to deleted the end portion of the
clip.
