Emergency Tools & Supplies


Emergency Tools and supplies are items that will undoubtedly come in handy during an disastrous event. Depending on the situation, you may only use certain items at any one time while other may not get used at all. The bottom line is that its better to have and not need, then to need and not have!      

Items that you would most likely need during an evacuation should be kept in an easy-to carry container or duffle bag - suggested items are marked with an asterisk (*). In the event of an evacuation, emergency officials will provide you with the location of a temporary shelter set up for residents of the affected area.    


Emergency Tools & Supplies


If the list of items seems rather large, don't be alarmed, you probably have most of the items in your home already. All you have to do is gather them together and make an inventory list. For storage information, see: Storing Your Supplies

  • Flashlight and extra batteries*
  • Police Scanner or Battery-operated radio and extra batteries*
  • Sturdy Work Gloves
  • Fire extinguisher (small canister ABC type)
  • Non-electric can opener, utility knife*
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Duct Tape
  • Pliers
  • Compass
  • Waterproof matches
  • Aluminum foil
  • Signal flares
  • Paper, pencil
  • Needles, thread
  • Shut-off wrench (to turn off gas and water)

Other Considerations:

  • Portable Electric Generator (plus FUEL) - r Remember, light requires little energy from a generator. A 200-watt light bulb will light a camp well enough to read by. Creating heat or cold require large amounts of electricity. Your hair dryer probably requires 1500 watts of output to run. So purchase your generator with sufficient power for your needs. Or plan your appliances according to your generator's output. 

Cooking & Eating Utensils 


  • Foam cups (works for both hot & cold drinks)
  • Paper plates
  • Plastic utensils (forks & spoons)*
  • Plastic storage containers
  • Mess Kit (available at any sporting goods store)
  • Stirring Spoon 
  • Several cans of Sterno (for cooking & heating)

Sanitation


  • Toilet paper, towelettes*
  • Soap, liquid detergent*
  • Feminine supplies*
  • Personal hygiene items*
  • Plastic garbage bags, ties (for personal sanitation uses)*

  • Household chlorine bleach (can also be used for purifying water)

Include at least one complete change of clothing and footwear per person.
