Special Needs to Consider

Family members such as infants, elderly or disabled persons, and pets have special requirements that need to be addressed. The following are items you need to consider.

For Infants

All prescription medications should be kept in their original bottle along with copies of the prescriptions.

  • Formula
  • Diapers
  • Bottles
  • Powdered milk
  • Medications

For Adults/Elderly

All prescription medications should be kept in their original bottle along with copies of the prescriptions. Ask your physician or pharmacist about storing prescription medications.

  • Heart and high blood pressure medication
  • Insulin
  • Prescription drugs
  • Denture needs
  • Contact lenses and supplies
  • Eyeglasses (with a copy of the prescription)
  • Medical devices, such as crutches, prostheses, etc.

For Pets

Plan to care for pets ahead of time. During an evacuation, shelters do not allow pets because of health regulations. For more information on how to care for your pets, visit our Animal Safety section on the American Red Cross website.
