Know the Dangers

Those who are forewarned are forearmed. The odds of survival are in your favor if you know what to expect beforehand. This section will give you an overview of some of the dangers you should be prepared to deal with and what is likely to occur not only from large scale events that affect a widespread area, but small scale events that affect a localized area like your neighborhood.

While there is no way to accurately predict what will happen, or what your personal circumstances will be, the impact scenarios will give you an insight into what is likely to occur during a specific event so that you will be better prepared to react, deal with, and get through the inevitable.

The information has been divided into two categories, Large-Scale Events and Small-Scale Events, each with it's own sub-categories.

Large-Scale Events

Large scale events are events that have the potential to produce heavy damage and casualties. These events include, but are not limited to;

  • Natural Disasters - including earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms/flash floods, tsunamis, destructive landslides, and winter storms/blizzard conditions and avalanches.
  • Major Incidents - including toxic chemical spills/emergencies, natural gas main ruptures/explosions, air & rail disasters, and more
  • Terrorism - including attacks using explosives, chemical, biological, radiological "dirty bombs", and even nuclear.

Click on any of the above for more information including impact scenarios.

Small Scale Incidents

Small scale events are events that affect a localized area. These types of events occur thousands of times a day across America and include, but are not limited to;

  • Dangerous Police Activity - including high-speed pursuits, foot pursuits, neighborhood lock-downs for suspect containment searches, barricaded suspect situations, rampaging suspects, crime scenes, etc.
  • Emergency Rescue Operations - including structure fires, large commercial building fires, major traffic accidents, etc.
  • Low-Impact Events - including power outages, rolling blackouts, roadway debris, etc.
