Here
is a quick look inside the dispatch command center of one
of the largest fire departments in the nation, the Los Angeles
County Fire Department (LACOFD). The LACOFD command and control
center is an a state-of-the-art earthquake resistant building.
The building sits on top of a bed of giant springs called
"base-isolators", built to withstand and minimize
damage from an 8.0 or greater earthquake. The command center has
10 Call Taker positions, 9 Radio Operator positions, 1 Supervisors Console,
and 1 Radio Console for Training. There are over 20 frequencies monitored or used via 14 Mountain Top Repeater sites.
Overall,
the department
operates 9 divisions, 20 battalions, 163 engine
companies, 31 truck companies, 79 paramedic units, and numerous
other pieces of specialized apparatus out of 157 fire stations
located throughout the Department’s 2,278 square mile area.
The department also has 11 fire suppression camps, a Lifeguard
division, and a Forestry and Health Hazardous Materials
